So let's first dive in by taking a look at some of the reasons that you may want to consider a buzz cut so we can better help you with that decision.
HERE ARE 8 REASONS TO GET A BUZZ CUT:
A BUZZ CUT GIVES YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO REDEFINE YOURSELF
Let's face it we all need a little change once in a while. With a simple cut of the scissors, it can take years off of our appearance, help us feel rejuvenated, and even boost our confidence, all the while giving us the attention we sometimes just down right deserve. A new hairstyle allows us to change and reinvent ourselves; to subtly – or not so subtly, represent our sense of creativity, energy and even spunk.
Just think about it – our hair allows us to alter something impermanently about ourselves, while allowing us to uniquely express our beautiful personalities. Too often we allow ourselves, or may often not even realize, how easily we can drown in the subtleties of life. It is important to be aware of these moments, shake out the ruts and give yourself enough personal time for some fresh rejuvenation and there really is no better way than with a fresh, new hair cut and style.
A BUZZ CUT ALTERS HOW PEOPLE LOOK AT YOU
Hair is one of the first things that we notice about another person. It's what we tend to look at first when formulating an opinion about someone.
When it comes to hair and other people’s perceptions, one of the most common questions is whether or not women are more attracted to men with short hair than men with long hair. There isn’t a clear cut answer, and if you search the internet long enough, you can find data to support either direction.
That said, there is a great deal of women that view men with short hair as more masculine and more attractive. And, some women say they are turned off by a man who spends way too much time focusing on their hair, they say they find that unattractive.
BUZZ CUTS ARE LOW MAINTENANCE
The buzz cut significantly cuts down on the amount of time it takes you to get ready in the morning. It’s universally considered the perfect no maintenance or low maintenance hairstyle.
You could literally roll out of bed and skip the shower.....but you might smell a bit. Nobody would really know the difference, just as long as you don’t skip too many showers! Guys this is not an excuse to skip showers!
Even when you do shower, you really won't need to use conditioner. And even better you won't need to spend time blow drying and combing when you get out.
In the summer months you can move from beach to pool to dinner without having to take any time out of your day to restyle your hair.
You don’t have to worry about a terribly windy day messing up your hairstyle. You can roll the windows down on the highway and really suffer very little hair consequences.
Just don't be surprised if your friends ask to rub your head for good luck haha and well you won't have a bad hair day afterwards.
BUZZ CUTS SAVE YOU MONEY ON HAIRCUTS & STYLING PRODUCTS
Men are spending more and more money on grooming products than ever before, and the truth is, the longer your hair gets, the more expensive it gets to make it look great.
Men's hair styling products are getting more and more expensive as well. Many men opting for more natural products for their hair and the price goes along with it. Don't get us wrong, depending on which buzz cut hairstyle you choose you may want to use a little product but your usage will be very minimal to say the least.
BUZZ CUTS HIDE SOME OF THE GREY
For most men grey hairs start popping up right after they hit 30 or it would seem as though strangely right on your 30th birthday....just kidding obviously. If you do have a lot of grey hairs though and your not into dying your hair you will certainly benefit from cutting it shorter. The more grey hair you have on your head and the longer it grows the more grey your going to show. Unless you are really going for that new grey hair look that some men and women are going for these days, but we'll leave that for another blog post.
BUZZ CUTS ARE COOLER IN THE SUMMER MONTHS
Obviously less hair means cooler head in the summer months. Immediately you'll notice that when taking a shower after your first buzz cut you'll feel your head much cooler and refreshing. If your out in the hot sun you'll be sweating and the moisture mixed with a breeze will cool your head off much quicker than with long hair that's sweaty and thick.
BUZZ CUTS LOOK BETTER ON MEN WITH THINNING HAIR
If your hair is thinning it can look patchy and mismanaged if it's too long. Some men will opt for shorter hair and generally get a buzz once they notice there hair is thinning out a bit. This can be a great way to manage and hide some of the obvious thinning spots making them less noticeable.
BUZZ CUTS HELP DEFINE YOUR FACIAL FEATURES
The more hair you have the more focus people put on your hair and not your face. A good buzz cut will put extra emphasis on a mans face and less on his hair. If you have a chiselled face and or nice facial features a buzz cut will really show off your face well and you want that. Women are attracted to a man with nice facial features so show it off if you have it.
8 DIFFERENT TYPES OF BUZZ CUTS
Now that we’ve shown you 8 different reasons to consider a buzz cut let’s take a look at some of the different buzz cut styles that you could choose from:
THE BUZZ CUT OR MILITARY CUT
Traditionally, the buzz cut is done with no guard on the clippers, and the hair is cut to be the same length all over. It’s the shortest you can go without taking a razor to your head. It’s the most extreme of the buzz cuts, and if you are looking for a fresh start, this is a total reset button.
You'll see this cut on most men that are in the military since it's the shortest and easiest to maintain. Hence why it's named the military cut.
THE BURR CUT
The burr cut is done with the number 1 to 3 guard on the clippers. It leaves a little more length than the buzz cut, making it a bit less extreme. The burr cut is traditionally the same length all over the head. But you could choose a burr cut with a skin fade or low taper for other quite popular variations of this buzz cut.
THE BUTCH CUT
The butch cut is the longest of the buzz cut styles and is done with a 4 guard set on the clippers. Your hair is still movable, and if you have curly hair, the butch cut still leaves a little amount of texture. With a butch cut, there’s still just enough hair that a tiny amount of hair product can add some volume and shape to your hair just in case you need it.
THE CREW CUT
The crew cut is rumoured to have been named after a bunch of Ivy League rowers way back in the 1930s. It differs from the buzz cut in that it includes fading on the back and sides while leaving more length on top. For a traditional crew cut, you would go with butch length or a 4 guard on top faded into shorter sides.
There are a few other variations of the crew cut, including the high and tight, the buzz cut fade, and the flattop which we will get into later in this article.
THE CAESAR BUZZ CUT
The Caesar cut is a hairstyle with short, horizontally straight cut bangs. The hair is layered to around 2 to 5 cm or aprox 1-2 inches all over. It is named after the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar, whose images frequently show him wearing this popular hair style.
THE FLAT TOP BUZZ CUT
The flattop is an old school type of crew cut mostly known to be very popular back in the 90's. This haircut features a blocky sort of appearance on top and long and tapered on sides and back. Another variation of the flat top buzz cut is called horseshoe flattop which has a small strip of shorter hair in the centre of the block.
THE HIGH AND TIGHT BUZZ CUT
The high and tight is a military classic, getting it's routes by being the perfect hairstyle for those who have to wear helmets regularly while still sticking to military regulations.
If you're looking for something low maintenance day to day then the high and tight could well be for you!
A high and tight haircut involves having the hair clipped high on the back and sides. The typical military high and tight would have either been a buzz or a crew cut, but the top can really be in pretty much any style you like it to, as long as the back and sides are taken ultra high with not much of a blend at the top.
THE HARD PART BUZZ CUT
A hard part is a type of shaved part also known as a razor part. The hard part buzz cut features a clean line shaved down to the scalp with a trimmer or razor. Hard parts are traditionally worn on the side and look great when cut into your buzz cut hairstyle.
BUZZ CUTS WITH DIFFERENT FACE SHAPES
A lot of guys get shy when considering the buzz cut because they fear they have an odd shaped head. It's really not the shape of your head that determines how the buzz cut will look, it's actually the shape of your face. So here we are going to demonstrate why you shouldn't be scared to get a buzz cut and not to be scared of what your head shape is. Pay more attention to what face shape you have to best determine which buzz cut haircut you will want to go with. So let's break it down shall we.
Essentially there are six overall face shapes:
-
Oval
-
Oblong/Rectangle
-
Round
-
Square
-
Diamond
-
Triangle
Generally, the goal of choosing a hairstyle centres around creating a more oval appearance to your face.
Men with oval and oblong faces typically have the most freedom to sport different types of hairstyles because that oval and oblong shape is maintained despite the haircut.
When it comes to buzz cuts, it can work really well for all face shapes, with the exception of some of the triangles out there. The triangle face shape is that one with the wide prominent jaw, and a narrow forehead. Any buzz cut on a triangular face is going to give you a very distinctive egg look that you probably don't want.
Let’s take a look and break it down by each face shape shall we:
Oval
Go ahead and buzz away. You lucked out with this face shape, any length buzz, burr, butch, and crew cut looks great.
Oblong/Rectangle
This is a bit trickier, if you’ve got that classic egg shape, go with a longer buzz on top, like a burr or butch cut. Adding a low taper can help reduce that egg shape too. A crew cut is a great option here. Avoid the high and tight as that is going to really draw focus to the narrowness of your crown. On the flip side, if your jaw is more narrow than your forehead, a buzz cut can leave you looking like an alien. Fortunately, you can add a beard to fill out your jawline.
Round
Another great shape to have, go ahead and buzz, burr, and butch, they all work great and are perfect cuts for round faces. For the crew cut, take the fade a little bit higher to give a more oval appearance.
Square
Buzz, burr, and butch cuts all work great for square faces. But if your looking to sport the crew cut, take the fade a little bit higher on the head to give you a more oval type appearance.
Diamond
The classic crew cut is a perfect choice for men with a diamond face. The extra length on top with a mid level fade really helps to give men a more rounded look.
Triangle
For men with triangular faces, you generally will want to keep the sides a bit longer in length, which doesn’t lend itself particularly well to the buzz cut. If you decide to go with a shorter look, than you'll want to stick with the butch cut length, and if you decide to add in a taper, then you'll want to keep it quite low.
BUZZ CUTS WITH A BEARD
A buzz cut with a beard, well that's probably our favourite choice being that were a beard grooming company. We think that buzz cuts with beards go hand in hand and here we'll break down some more face shapes that tend to match up perfectly.
But just remember your face shape should factor into your beard style decision as well.
Oval
Men with oval faces for the most part can do just about anything when combining a beard with a buzz cut. Going with a year long power beard in our opinion looks amazing! There is no end to this match up being the oval is the universal match up for beards and buzz cuts. Again, the real benefit of having an oval face shape is that everything tends to work well.
Oblong/Rectangle
Similar to the oval, but avoid going too long with the beard. Keep it in the corporate to power beard length; otherwise, you run the risk of really over accentuating your long and narrow head shape. If your forehead is smaller than your jaw, keep the beard from getting too round on the cheeks. If your jaw is thinner than your forehead, keeping the beard a little more round will help fill out your face.
Round
The corporate or the power length beard works great on round faces. Have your barber taper in the cheeks to help keep your beard from getting too round. We recommend keeping your beard a little more narrow at the bottom to help show off a more oval type appearance to your face.
Square
If you have a square face shape you'll want to keep your beard a little shorter and rounder near the bottom. You can ask your barber to fade the cheeks keeping your beard from adding too much width there.
Diamond
Adding a beard to a diamond shaped face is probably a really solid move. This is going to help soften the edges of your jawline. Don't be scared to add in a little length here but you'll want to avoid shaping your beard into a point. The reason being is your face has enough angles to it and you certainly don’t need to add in any more.
Triangle
This ones trickier so the easiest thing to do here is to keep a light stubble to accentuate the jawline without adding any more bulk too it.
